A miracle occurred this past Sunday morning (Nov. 11) in the Warren Lane neighborhood. That’s when dad, Alejandro M. Perez Duque, and his very pregnant and in labor wife, Meche Phelan, were preparing for a trip to the hospital when they realized they would not make it. Little Guillermo was showing his head and there was no turning back.
Alejandro called the KBPD and within four minutes Key Biscayne Fire Rescue was on site. They quickly determined Guillermo was going to be a true Key Rat, born on the island! They set up a makeshift delivery room in the Perez-Duque’s garage and within minutes, and after two strong pushes from Mami Meche, Guillermo was crying up a storm. Paramedics helped Alejandro cut the umbilical cord of this 7.5-lb bundle of joy, then they all proceeded to South Miami Hospital to complete the process.
Alejandro was nearly at a loss for words later as he recounted the event for the Islander News, including how grateful he is for the assistance of our dedicated Fire Rescue and KBPD first respondents.
As if the birth of true Key Rat Guillermo wasn’t excitement enough, neighbors across the street from the birthing commotion were having a party. Of course, they came over and a celebratory street party broke out! Guillermo came into the world bringing joy to many!
