Skin care regimen

For a healthier 2020, start with a quality skincare regimen

Dear Dr. Kelly: My New Year's resolution is to look better. I am dieting and exercising, but I am not yet ready for injectables or surgery. What else can I do to look better?

Response: Congratulations on using the New Year to take control of your life! Diet and exercise are daily, lifelong commitments we all need to make to be healthy and look our best. In my opinion, the next part of the equation is to take care of your skin.

While it is important to start with a dermatologist or plastic surgeon, the next step is usually to see a medical aesthetician for a facial. I see getting a monthly facial as analogous to going to your dental hygienist. Whether it is skin or teeth, we need periodic maintenance by a professional that we can't do on our own.

So what happens during a facial? The first step is to evaluate the patient's skin. Is it dry or oily? Are there skin tone irregularities? Are there blackheads or pimples? Does the patient have any pre-cancerous lesions? All of this needs to be assessed.

After the initial assessment, the treatment phase begins. The skin is cleansed and exfoliated (where dead skin cells are removed). This can be accomplished by shaving with a special knife called a dermaplane and/or by a hydrafacial, which uses a water jet and suction to accomplish the same thing. Next, clogged pores are unclogged by extractions. Much like popping a pimple, the aesthetician forces the obstructed duct open with her fingers. This is usually followed by a soothing skin mask and LED light therapy. Finally, the aesthetician will educate you on at-home skin care and make recommendations for daily products for your skin care routine.

Depending on the patient's needs, daily skin care products can include antioxidants, moisturizers, discoloration serums, and always include sun block. You will leave with clean skin, feeling refreshed and with a game plan to make your skin even better for 2020!
