TKA members take part in a breast cancer awareness event in October. This spring, they plan Water Safety Day and the SwimFit Championships and Water Polo All-Star Game. A summer camp is also in the works.

Team Key Aquatics has some exciting news for local water sports enthusiasts, both in terms of learning new skills and learning how to stay safe.

Key Biscayne-based TKA, led by coaches Iggy and Gaby Larrea, has announced the date for its annual SwimFit Championships & Water Polo All-Star Game and plans for an exciting summer camp. And, coming next week, the team will host its annual Water Safety Week to teach residents a variety of lessons on enjoying the water safely.

TKA will host the 2018 SwimFit Championships & Water Polo All-Star Game May 29 at the Key Biscayne Community Center Aquatic Complex.

“You don’t want to miss it,” Coach Iggy said. “For those of you who are new to the TKA family, the SwimFit Championships and Water Polo All-Star Game is a four-day friendly event to find Key Biscayne’s fittest young aquatic athletes. It is an exciting week of challenges for girls and boys alike between the grades of kindergarten and 8, and it’s a thrilling experience for participants’ parents, siblings and classroom friends.”

The event is free to attend.

He said in the past, the competition was made up of two sports: swimming and water polo. New this year, “SwimFit Events will include elements of one of the toughest sports on the water – surfing!” he said. “Be ready for some action-packed surf events this year, dudes. They’re going to be epic!”

On a mission to develop the most exhilarating “surf style” events for the championships, Coach Iggy was on location at Puro Surf Hotel and Performance Academy in El Salvador a few weeks ago for some brainstorming.  He provided a video link,, to show the events he has in mind.

With surfing being the focal point this year, TKA is excited to announce that Puro Surf Hotel and Performance Academy will be a proud sponsor of the SwimFit Championships & All-Star Water Polo Game and home of TKA’s 1st Annual International Surf Camp this summer.

Pedro Querejeta, a fellow Key Rat and longtime family friend of Coach Gaby and Coach Iggy, along with professional surf coach Marcelo Castellanos, have developed an oasis on the coast of El Salvador for hotel guests and surfers of all levels, ages and abilities.  “The best part about Puro Surf is that it’s just a hop, skip and a jump away from Key Biscayne,” Coach Iggy said.

Meanwhile, there’s fun to be had even sooner, and right on the Key.

Starting Monday, April 9, TKA’s Water Safety Week is back. Starting at 4:50 p.m. each day that week at the Key Biscayne Community Center pool, Coaches Iggy and Gaby will be discussing all things water safety.

“We will be covering a different topic each day, so please try to attend. Your attendance could save someone’s life,” Iggy noted.
