The Village of Key Biscayne Fire Rescue Departments is prepared to celebrate the 4th of July and wants to assure residents and visitors have a fun and safe holiday. A few things to consider for your day and night celebrations.

Stay hydrated and cool – This year South Florida is breaking temperature records and June 2019 has been one of the hottest months ever. Assure that individuals, families and even your pets find a way to stay hydrated and cool. https://www.cdc.gov/disasters/extremeheat/heattips.html

See something, say something – During the parade, fireworks or any time large crowds gather, stay alert. When in doubt call 911 and report what may be of concern. https://www.dhs.gov/see-something-say-something/about-campaign/seesay-day

BBQ and Fireworks - The 4th is a perfect day to grill out and celebrate. Leave fireworks to the professionals and use caution with grilling. It is not uncommon for flash burns to occur when attempting to light a gas BBQ if not done safely.

Keep your grill outside and at least 10 feet away from any structures, including siding, deck rails and eaves.

Clean your grill regularly. Cleaning removes grease that can start a fire.

Check for propane leaks on gas grills by applying a light soap and water solution to the hose and then turning on the gas. If there is a leak, the solution will bubble.

Never leave a grill unattended while in use.

When using a grill, make sure you have a water source or a fire extinguisher nearby. https://www.nfpa.org/-/media/Files/Public-Education/Resources/Safety-tip-sheets/Grilling_safety_Tips.pdf

Key Biscayne Fire Rescue traditionally has some fun at the Fire Station located at 560 Crandon Blvd before the parade is over. The ladder truck sprays water and cools the area. It provides a great spot for families and pets to cool off. The day will wrap up on Key Biscayne with a Fire Works Display. A barge is located east of the Key Biscayne Beach Club. Key Biscayne Fire Rescue plays an active role in supporting Village and the Parks and Recreation Director Todd Hofferberth in assuring that the fireworks display is a successful and safe event.

Key Biscayne Fire Rescue wishes everyone a Safe and Happy 4th of July!
