Where in the World

The Bettys in Berlin. Long time Key Biscayner and former Council Woman, Betty Sime Conroy (left) with friend and former islander (now residing on the west coast of Naples) Betty McManus. They traveled together recently to one of the most historic spots in Europe commemorating the triumph of democracy…with their favorite newspaper.

The Berlin Wall was built in 1961 by Communist East Germany to keep their people in and others out. In the decades that followed at least 171 people were killed trying to scale it in search of freedom beyond the barrier.

On the weekend of November 9, 1989, after the communists announced unrestricted travel across the border, over two million Germans celebrated the fall of the wall. Sister cities estranged since 1945 were once again united in what journalists called “the greatest street party in the history of the world.” Prost!
